DePaul hires Purnell

The DePaul Blue Demons have hired Clemson’s Oliver Purnell as their new head coach.

The Blue Demons gave Purnell a considerable raise over what he was making at Clemson to lure him to Chicago.

DePaul is hoping that they have finally found the right coach who can turn around their struggling basketball program.

The school has been through several coaches over the past decade or so with little to no success.

Purnell is hoping to change that and wants to make sure that he keeps the top Chicago recruits home for college.

Former DePaul star Corbin interested in head-coaching gig

Former DePaul star and current Utah Jazz assistant coach Tyrone Corbin told Salt Lake City’s Deseret News that he is interested in the school’s vacant head-coaching position.

Corbin admitted that he has yet to speak to anyone officially connected to the university, but that he has “talked with some people from the school…”

Corbin, who played for the Blue Demons from 1981-1985, has no head coaching experience but is generally well-thought of by NBA front office personnel.

Still, would he be the right choice for a program that desperately needs to return to respectability? He’s not as young nor well-connected to the Chicago area as Southern Illinois’ Chris Lowery, and this is a hire that DePaul can’t afford to screw up. If the school chooses not to go with someone with local roots, it must make a splash with a big-name hire. Chicago is one of the most talent-rich recruiting areas in the country, and the Blue Demons need someone who can keep at least some of that talent close to home.
